At the Tepper School of Business Diploma Ceremony on May 16, 2009, the following awards were presented:
The William W. Cooper Doctoral Dissertation Award in Management or Management Science for 2009 was awarded to Guoming Lai, Tepper PhD student in the Management of Manufacturing and Automation area of study. Mr. Lai was chosen for this award by a faculty committee headed by Professor Yuji Ijiri, for his dissertation “Essays on Operations Management with Strategic Consumer Behavior, Real Earnings Management, and Capital Financing”.
The Gerald L. Thompson Doctoral Dissertation Award in Management Science for 2009 has been awarded to Viswanath Nagarajan, Tepper PhD student. Mr. Nagarajan was chosen for this award by a faculty committee headed by Professor Michael Trick, for his dissertation “Approximation Algorithms for Sequencing Problems”.
At a special Tea on April 30, 2009, Prof. Jonathan Glover, Chairman of the Doctoral Program Committee presented The Alexander Henderson Award for Excellence in Economic Theory to Richard Lowery. Richard will be joining the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor this fall. Congratulations!

Tepper PhD Alumni
CHARLES EVANS, MSIA 1985, PhD 1989 (Advisor: Bennett T. McCallum), was named President of Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, effective September 1, 2007. Evans, 49, replaced Michael H. Moskow, who retired August 31 after 13 years as president.
OLIVER E. WILLLIAMSON, MSIA 1962, PhD 1963 (Advisor: Richard M. Cyert), Edgar F. Kaiser Professor Emeritus of Business, Economics and Law at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, was awarded Distinguished Fellow by the American Economic Association (AEA). Williamson's work has examined how varying organizational structures for markets and institutions affect economic activity. His style blends social science with abstract economic theory and has been said to have influenced everything from investment in Eastern Europe to HRM in the technology industry.
